History of the Band
I first met Kevin and Mike in 1996 as they were working with Tim Lovel (an Aussie youth leader who, at that time, was working for Faith Bible Chapel) as musicians in the “Rock Pile” youth worship band. Mike was playing Piano and Kevin was rockin’ his Gibson SG. I remember God saying to me, “Some day you are going to play in a band with these guys.”
Later that year I auditioned for a band they were forming thinking “This was it!” Well much to my dismay, they rejected me on the basis that I was “too good of a bass player” (Ok, seriously, who doesn’t get an audition on that basis?) I think they thought I was way too serious because I came out with the whole “God told me” thing.
The next year I started leading worship at Faith Bible Chapel South and at the Youth With A Mission base in Denver. Through this I met two talented musicians who have become good friends of my wife and me, Anna and Brent Manke. Anna assisted me in directing the School of Worship at YWAM and also leading worship at Faith Bible Chapel South.
In 2007, I was offered an opportunity to lead worship at Faith Bible Chapel in Arvada and was able to pull together a team of musicians for a new ministry we called “Fuel”. It was awesome to be apart of something new at Faith that was right up our alley, allowing us to draw from a rock background and create a musically “modern” focused time of worship. “Fuel” brought together many great musicians from the local area and around the world. Danny Battenhouse, Anthony Lee, Jason King, Matt Styke, Dave Powers, Donevon Loewen, Mike Stonebreaker, Gary Russell, David Zuidema, Keith Romero, David Troyer, Jim Mayo, Rachel Warren-Harrison, Tim Straup, Andrew Harrison, Anna Manke and Brent Manke to name a few.
Through “Fuel” God brought together our “core” team, including the likes of Mike and Kevin who I had hardly seen since ’96, the days of Rock Pile. Andrew Harrison and Anna and Brent Manke, who all work with me at YWAM, joined Kevin, Mike and me to make up “the band.” Here I was, playing in a band “with these guys” as God told me over a decade earlier.
Working together as Musicians who have passion to use music as a language, to articulate who God is, has made us aware that He wants to use this language far outside the confines of the Sunday morning service. That is the bottom line for our music. We are to bring glory to our Maker by being a mouthpiece through music. This brings us to the present, “Fuel” having ended summer of 2008; we are a group of friends and musicians wanting to live life and be His Melody makers together.
